Perth Bridge World Bridge Championships 1989

In 1989, the Bridge World Championships were a bit different. In the odd years when the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup were at stake, the winners of the North American zone and the European zones had byes to the semi-finals. The USA only got one team in each category. This meant that my team, having won the US women's team trials, needed to win only 2 matches to win a world championship. Mind you those matches were over 2 days each against the teams who had played their way through the round robin and the early knock out rounds. So they were ready for us.
